Hierarchies of power in Saudi Arabia are fundamentally based on sexual difference and the female-male binary. The country’s guardianship laws explicitly discriminate against women on the basis of their sex. According to these laws, the life of a Saudi woman is fully in the hands of another person, a man, and her rights are left up to him, rather than the rule of law, to either uphold or deny. Such a system renders women invisible, ignored, voiceless, oppressed, and marginalized. It is, through the medium of art, that I peacefully exercise my right to civil disobedience. I Am My Own Guardian is a personal response to institutionalized patriarchy. It is a strike, a stance against injustice. My work represents the untold struggles of my Saudi sisters who suffer under this system. I am hopeful and optimistic that my work will provoke radical social transformation and open the door for new possibilities.]📍Fish Lane, Southbank, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia","author_name":"dkjstreetartphotography","author_url":"https://streetartcities.com/users/795db273-3bea-4a05-848e-daaf216b6239","thumbnail_url":"https://streetartcities.com/media/9/9dc8721f-6365-405e-a079-23e0b9bfbc03/1024.jpg","thumbnail_width":1024,"width":480,"height":480,"html":"<iframe src=\"https://streetartcities.com/markers/24873/embed\" width=\"480\" height=\"480\" style=\"border:none;border-radius:12px;max-width:100%;\" loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"fullscreen; storage-access\" title=\"Untitled by Ms Saffaa\"></iframe>","cache_age":3600}
