Jansen was a member of the Chandler Arts Commission when the library was looking for a public art component for its opening in 1996. The Chandler Arts Commission did not receive any satisfactory proposals, so Jansen decided to offer his own design at no cost to the city. The funds allocated through Chandler’s 1% for the arts program were used for materials only. The concrete walls can serve as seating to those who visit the library.
