The work was created in 2016 as part of an extensive art-in-architecture project developed following the renovation of the school. Voit produced several individual works for the school complex. The composition consists of a tall white field covered by an intricate red geometric structure. Circles, rectangles, arches and diagonal lines overlap to form a highly ordered, almost symmetrical pattern. The restrained red-and-white palette relates directly to the red façade of the building.Voit based the work on his long-standing use of historical stencil systems. The stencil employed for the school project was identified by the city as a Plaque Découpée Universelle (PDU), a 19th-century universal stencil containing letters, numbers, punctuation marks, circles and ornamental forms. Voit has incorporated such stencils into his artistic practice for many years. The mural forms part of a broader educational and social concept developed under the theme “Die Vielfalt macht uns stark!” (“Diversity makes us strong!”). At the time, the school was attended by children from more than 40 nations and different religious backgrounds. The project therefore addressed learning, language and cultural diversity.
