In the spring of 1981, he went on hunger strike at Maze Prison, also known as Long Kesh. He died after 66 days, on 5 May 1981. During the strike, he was elected to the British House of Commons in a by-election for Fermanagh and South Tyrone.Sands subsequently became a central figure in Irish republican commemorative culture. The mural functions both as a political memorial and as a prominent example of the public murals that shape the urban landscape of Belfast's republican neighbourhoods. It connects an individual portrait with a broader historical narrative of imprisonment, sacrifice and Irish republicanism.The two inscriptions read: “Everyone, republican or otherwise, has their own particular role to play” and “…our revenge will be the laughter of our children”.
