Egg cartons and sausages point to the practical work of volunteers assembling food and provisions for imprisoned members of loyalist paramilitary organisations. The East Belfast Conflict Museum identifies the women as volunteers of the Loyalist Prisoners Aid (LPA) and confirms that the supplies were intended for prisoners held at Crumlin Road Gaol and Long Kesh.The mural forms part of Freedom Corner, a multi-panel mural project by the artist collective Blaze FX, completed in 2022 on the Newtownards Road. The ensemble documents different aspects of the history of the loyalist community and the East Belfast Brigade of the Ulster Defence Association (UDA). The depiction of women adds a perspective on the support work carried out within these communities to the surrounding imagery of men in a paramilitary context.During the Troubles, women in affected families and neighbourhoods took on important responsibilities for supporting prisoners and maintaining family relationships. Their work formed part of the social infrastructure that shaped the lives of prisoners and their relatives. At the same time, the mural must be understood in the context of the loyalist organisations whose members received this support. The UDA was a loyalist paramilitary organisation, and the prisoners’ aid network operated within its wider milieu.","author_name":"The Heck With It!","author_url":"https://streetartcities.com/users/78388358-e8b3-408f-ba18-d3453c1a15f5","thumbnail_url":"https://streetartcities.com/media/9/9c89d7df-62b5-487e-964b-b1e35b92d4a5/1024.jpg","thumbnail_width":1024,"width":480,"height":480,"html":"","cache_age":3600}
