For centuries, the surrounding waters, creeks, mudflats and sandbanks were the working environment of fishermen and sailors, but also of smugglers who knew the tides, channels and hidden routes like no one else.And then, of course, there is Southend Pier — stretching far out into the Thames Estuary and now one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.
