Roukes is een schilder die internationaal exposeert en bekendstaat om zijn grote doeken en murals, waarin dieren en stadsbeelden door elkaar lopen. Price werkt als ambachtelijk graficus en schildert al ruim twintig jaar muren, gevels en belettering.Er liep vroeger veel pluimvee rond in de Hofstad. Dat gegeven hebben we meerdere keren gehoord in de bewonersbijeenkomst.Niet alleen kippen en hanen, ook varkens en andere dieren liepen vaak los rond in de buurt. Samen met de vele begroeiing leek Hofstad soms meer op een erf dan op een woonwijk. Zo wordt de wijk dan ook levendig herinnerd.In dit ontwerp beelden we een van deze hanen uit. We noemen hem Karel. Curieuze Karel. Deze haan is de baas van de wijk en slaat van achter de vele bloemperken alles gade wat zich in de buurt afspeelt. Hij kent alle geheimen en alle verhalen van alle bewoners.Als een soort abstracte tijdcapsule symboliseert Karel de rijke geschiedenis van deze prachtige volksbuurt. De geschiedenis die misschien wel juist wordt gekenmerkt door de kleine verhalen van alledag.”https://kingsofcolors.com/hofstad/==========Kings of Colors: “De Hofstad is a truly working-class neighbourhood and a close-knit community in Den Bosch. People look out for one another, for each other’s children and even for each other’s pets. At the same time, people from very different backgrounds live there. That’s why the Art Court had to be a place where everyone in the neighbourhood feels at home.With this in mind, Joram Roukes and Shon Price set to work. Roukes is a painter who exhibits internationally and is known for his large canvases and murals, in which animals and cityscapes intermingle. Price works as a traditional graphic artist and has been painting walls, façades and lettering for over twenty years.There used to be a lot of poultry roaming around Hofstad. We heard this mentioned several times at the residents’ meeting.It wasn’t just chickens and roosters; pigs and other animals were also often seen roaming freely in the neighbourhood. Together with the abundance of vegetation, Hofstad sometimes resembled a farmyard more than a residential area. This is how the neighbourhood is vividly remembered.In this design, we depict one of these cocks. We’ve named him Karel. Curious Karel. This cock is the boss of the neighbourhood and, from behind the many flower beds, keeps a watchful eye on everything that goes on in the area. He knows all the secrets and all the stories of all the residents.Like a sort of abstract time capsule, Karel symbolises the rich history of this wonderful working-class neighbourhood.
