Over the years, he has restored numerous historic painted advertisements and wall paintings throughout the city.During renovation work on the building in 2021, workers discovered old lettering hidden beneath layers of white plaster. The work was immediately halted while further investigation took place. Research revealed that the lettering belonged to the original painted advertisements of a drugstore that occupied the premises between 1902 and 1906. The green lettering on the ground floor is the oldest and provides a fascinating glimpse into the wide range of products sold by a drugstore at the beginning of the twentieth century.The lower advertisement even still displays the original prices. The inflation during the crisis years has not been factored into it.The restoration presented Jos Peeters with an interesting dilemma. What do you do when you are almost certain what a word originally said, but several letters have disappeared? Do you reconstruct the missing parts based on educated guesses, or do you leave them unfinished to remain faithful to the building's history? Peeters deliberately chose the latter approach. Words that could not be reconstructed with complete certainty were left incomplete, and the cleaned original surface was not painted over. As a result, visitors can still see the authentic traces of time and use their own imagination to complete the missing words.The restoration was commissioned by the Werkgroep Directe Voorziening (Direct Services Working Group) of the Municipality of Utrecht. The group is dedicated to enhancing public spaces by preserving, restoring and reinstating historic elements throughout the city.The restored façade was officially unveiled on 31 August 2026 in the presence of Utrecht's mayor, Sharon Dijksma. Visitors can learn more about the history of the building and the restoration project by scanning the QR code on a special information tile installed at the site.===========Jos Peeters heeft op een voormalig winkelpand op de hoek van de Abstederdijk en de Minstraat een verdwenen historische muurschildering in ere hersteld.Naast kunstschilder is Jos Peeters ook restaurateur. Hij heeft al diverse historische gevelreclames en oude muurschilderingen gerestaureerd.Tijdens werkzaamheden aan het pand in 2021 werden letters onder de wit gestucte vlakken gevonden. De werkzaamheden werden direct stilgelegd, waarna onderzoek uitwees dat het ging om de oorspronkelijke gevelreclames van een drogisterij die hier tussen 1902 en 1906 was gevestigd. De groene belettering op de begane grond is het oudst en laat zien welk bijzondere assortiment een drogisterij in die tijd voerde.Op de onderste schildering zijn zelfs de oorspronkelijke prijzen nog zichtbaar. De inflatie in de crisisjaren is er overigens niet in verwerkt.Bij de restauratie stond Jos Peeters voor een dilemma: wat doe je met een woord waarvan je vrijwel zeker weet wat er oorspronkelijk heeft gestaan, terwijl enkele letters ontbreken? Vul je die aan op basis van aannames, of laat je de ontbrekende delen zichtbaar om recht te doen aan de historische werkelijkheid? Hij koos bewust voor het laatste. Woorden die niet met volledige zekerheid konden worden gereconstrueerd, liet hij onvolledig. Ook schilderde hij de schoongemaakte ondergrond niet over, zodat zichtbaar blijft wat er oorspronkelijk heeft gestaan. Zo kan iedere voorbijganger zelf invullen welke woorden er ooit hebben gestaan.De restauratie kwam tot stand op initiatief van de Werkgroep Directe Voorziening van de gemeente Utrecht. Deze werkgroep zet zich in voor het verfraaien van de openbare ruimte, onder meer door historische elementen terug te brengen, te behouden en te restaureren.De gerestaureerde gevel werd op 31 augustus 2026 officieel onthuld in aanwezigheid van de Utrechtse burgemeester Sharon Dijksma.
