Het initiatief ontstond vanuit het wijkpanel tegenover de school, dat dagelijks uitkeek op de grote, kale zijgevels van het gebouw.Het ontwerp is geïnspireerd op de onderwijsvisie van Jan Amos Comenius, die geloofde dat goed onderwijs toegankelijk moest zijn voor iedereen. In zijn beroemde boek Orbis Pictus gebruikte hij beelden om kinderen de wereld te laten ontdekken en begrijpen.De mural is een eigentijdse vertaling van dit gedachtegoed.
