Untitled by Don Janssens

Don Janssens drew inspiration from one of the most famous themes of classical art: Vanitas, which focuses on the transience of life. On a personal level, the theme fits with Don's background as a graffiti artist. Graffiti is by nature ephemeral, as it is constantly erased and reapplied. Don followed a similar approach in his artwork, applying colors and building layer upon layer with a variety of tools: brush, aerosol, paint pens, and stencils. The whole piece has been given a substantively romantic tone. The characters come from images from the 1950s, a time characterized by a seemingly carefree spirit. The cheerful faces and bright colors are in stark contrast to the emotionally charged text and serious design.
