Origin by Marija Šoln

The Old Zvezdaras say that back in the day, long before the streets and high-rises, this place was first and foremost a hilltop looking straight up at the sky.It was called Veliki Vračar.People built an observatory up here, and the old name slowly gave way to the stars.Later on, a forest took over. Through the leaves of chestnut and oak trees, it would catch the first morning light before it hit the rest of the city. At night, you could hear the nightingale's song floating through the branches. That song was a reminder that our hood still had its own voice, even while time was changing everything. Then the concrete kicked in and sliced up the block. But beneath it all, Veliki Vračar stayed put, the stars remained above, and the forest stood right in between them. Her face is on this wall; she is my Veliki Vračar, my roots, a memory of the exact spot where everything started. With closed eyes, facing the sky, she keeps the memory of the stars alive and rises high above the concrete. In Zvezdara, the legend of how the hood came to be is still passed down—born right where the hill, the woods, the stream, the bird, and the sky all met. This mural is part of my personal series dedicated to Zvezdara, the hood where I was born, grew up, where I still live today, and where my own two nightingales were born and are growing up. Following the "Čuvari svetlosti" (Guardians of Light) mural, this is a new chapter of the same personal map. It's a tribute to a place where I was never just a guest—I belong here. That’s why this mural is for Zvezdara and its people, for all of us from the block who see way more than just an address in this place where we're fighting for better days.Marija Šoln
