Artwork by NPKF Studio

A powerful black-and-white bull’s head dominates the roller shutter in Hintergasse. The work combines a highly detailed depiction of the animal with an expressive, atmospheric use of colour. The mural was created by NPKF Studio as the studio’s first official commission. The project originated from repeated tags and graffiti on the roller shutter of Metzgerei Neumaier. Owner Frank Neumaier turned the problem into an opportunity, proposing that unwanted graffiti should be countered with high-quality artwork. The city of Neustadt helped establish contact with NPKF Studio, and according to the studio’s account, the commission was completed in less than three weeks. The project illustrates one way in which street art can be used in a private and commercial setting: rather than simply cleaning a repeatedly vandalised surface, the shutter was deliberately transformed into an artwork and an integral part of the streetscape.
