AK47 - Kiefernstraße 23 by Ben Mathis

The AK47 at Kiefernstraße 23 is Düsseldorf's most legendary punk and underground club. It is considered the heart of the local alternative culture and has a decades-long history closely tied to the street's famous squatting movement. Contrary to what many people assume, the name does not primarily refer to the Soviet assault rifle. Instead, it is a historical play on words derived from its address: The venue was originally founded as an anti-fascist neighborhood café called "Café Nix Da". Based on the house number 23 (Kiefernstraße 23) and inspired by the punk rock scene, the operators created a playful mathematical formula which resulted in the provocative name AK47.The facade purposefully shuns curated murals, relying instead on a chaotic, constantly evolving canvas of authentic graffiti tags, street art, and gig posters. In parts removed and vandalized, but still there.
