“Rising Tide” by Stefan Smit

When I was invited to paint a mural for @seawalls_ I was thrilled at the opportunity to merge my passion for portraiture with my respect and love for nature. Environmental conservation is a major concern for us all and I’m grateful that I had the chance to paint a piece in support of our oceans. Thank you to @Pangeaseed Foundation for bringing me on board this meaningful public art project in Cape Town.I wanted to create a beautiful artwork that grabs people’s attention, but when viewed closely, a more sinister side emerges - showing that the multicoloured and eye-catching elements are, in fact, microplastics and pollution. This subtle factor was important because I believe the problem of pollution often seems like a subtle one that can be influenced by many small daily actions that we choose, which ultimately compound in very big ways. I also wanted a key element of my work to be optimism and therefore chose to have a strong feminine figure rising triumphantly above the chaos symbolising a way forward for us all.PC: @yoshi_travel_
