Untitled by Marty Lyons

The mural on Violet Street in West Belfast depicts Irish boxer Michael Conlan and commemorates his achievement at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Conlan won the bronze medal in the flyweight division, making him one of four medal-winning members of Ireland’s boxing team at those Games.Painted by Marty Lyons, the mural appeared shortly after the Olympic success: Conlan and fellow Belfast boxer Paddy Barnes won their medals on 11 August 2012. The artwork was sponsored by local businesses The Beehive and McPeakes. It replaced an earlier Celtic-themed mural on the same wall. The work exemplifies a strand of Belfast’s mural tradition that celebrates local sporting achievements alongside the city’s political and historical narratives. Born in Belfast, Conlan is closely associated with the city’s boxing heritage.
